Mason Greenwood reappears on Man United first team following dropped charges

All charges of attempted rape and sexual assault have been dropped against Manchester United player Mason Greenwood. The 21-year-old was due to face trial in November.

Last January, police arrested the 21-year-old on charges of assault, attempted rape, and coercive behavior of his girlfriend, Harriet Robson. The two had been dating since 2019 until the incident took place.

Robson shared a series of images and audio online pinpointing her altercations with Greenwood. The photos displayed gruesome bruises to parts of her body, including a bloody lip.

Is Mason Greenwood eligible to play for Manchester United?

Manchester United suspended Greenwood following the allegations and initial arrest, although he still received his $92,000-a-week salary. Sponsors, including Nike and FIFA 22, immediately terminated their contracts with the player. Football Manager 2022 also removed him from the game.

Greenwood abstained from social media during his house arrest, staying silent on the matter. However, the former couple recently refollowed each other on Instagram.

“A decision has been made to discontinue prosecution in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors,” the Crown Prosecution Service announced in a public statement on Thursday.

With Robson refusing to testify and charges officially dropped, Greenwood broke his silence to tell the Sun, “I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.”

“There will be no further comment at this time.”

Following the “discontinued” criminal proceedings against Greenwood, Manchester United listed the player in the first team again on their website.

However, the club has not issued a specific statement on the matter. The club finally issued a statement on the matter, saying they'll conduct an internal investigation to “determine next steps.”

A United spokesman said: “The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

We don't suspect he'll be suiting for Ten Haag's side against Crystal Palace on Saturday or any time soon, for that matter. Let's see if Greenwood resumes training first.

The player made 129 appearances for the Red Devils and bagged 35 goals before appearing in his last game against West Ham on January 22 of last year. Greater Manchester police arrested him from his Cheshire mansion on January 30, 2022, on suspicion of rape and assault made by the victim.

Greenwood joins the list of footballers incarcerated for sexual assault, including Benjamin Mendy, Ronaldinho, Robinho, and Dani Alves. Arsenal star Thomas Partey and PSG defender Achraf Hakimi are also facing rape accusations but has yet to face jail.
