Manchester City are interested in signing Southampton forward Danny Ings as a potential replacement for Sergio Aguero, according to Sky Sports.
Aguero has been lined up for a move to Barcelona to join friend and international teammate Lionel Messi.
City have identified Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland as the ideal replacement but the ÂŁ100m price tag remains daunting.
Ings would cost a mere fraction of Haaland. The England forward is stalling on a new contract at Southhampton.
Liverpool sold Ings to Southampton in 2019 with a 20% sell-on clause, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Is Ings a worthy Aguero replacement?
The interest in Ings may come as a surprise to Manchester City fans.
The 28-year-old Ings scored 22 goals in the Premier League last season. But he's only scored 8 this term due to multiple injuries.
With 30 goals in 60 Premier League games, a fit Ings could offer Manchester City an out-and-out goalscorer.
Replacing Aguero, Manchester City's all-time leading goalscorer with 257 goals in 384 appearances and one of the Premier League's best, will always be a reach.
Perhaps Manchester City is lining up both Haaland and Ings this summer, with the former a more rightful Aguero replacement with Ings a formidable backup. Man City undoubtedly have the money to pursue both.
That makes more sense, right?
